The First World War
1914–1918 · Europe and other continents (the spark in Sarajevo)

In short
On 28 June 1914, in Sarajevo, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary was assassinated, and within a few weeks the great European powers had declared war on each other. Most of the fighting took place in the trenches, long ditches where soldiers lived for months in the mud. Italy entered the war in May 1915 against Austria, and fought in the Alps and along the River Isonzo. The conflict, with new weapons such as machine guns, aeroplanes and tanks, caused millions of deaths and ended in November 1918.
Why it matters It changed the map of Europe, brought down four empires and left wounds that led to new wars.
