Luther and the Reformation

1517 · Wittenberg, Germany

Illustration: Luther and the Reformation

In short

Martin Luther was a monk and a professor of theology in Wittenberg, in Germany. In 1517 he made public 95 Theses criticising the sale of indulgences, the reduction of punishment for sins obtained even by giving money. His ideas, spread quickly thanks to printing, led to a break with the Church of Rome. Luther also translated the Bible into German, so that everyone could read it.

Why it matters With the Protestant Reformation, Western Christianity split into several Churches, and Europe was changed for centuries.
