The first birds

Illustration: The first birds

In short

Archaeopteryx, which lived about 150 million years ago in what is now Germany, had feathers and wings but also teeth, a long bony tail and clawed fingers. Fossils found later showed that many bird features first appeared in theropods, the meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two legs. Feathers existed even before flight as we know it today.

Why it matters Birds are the only branch of the dinosaurs that has survived to the present day.
