In the rocks of Ediacara, in Australia, imprints have been found of living things from before the Cambrian. Many were shaped like discs, leaves or mattresses and do not clearly look like the animals of today. Scientists are still debating who their relatives were.
Why it matters These fossils show one of the first experiments in life big enough to be seen with the naked eye.
